چکیده

Progressive enlargement of posttraumatic syrinx cavities occurs in a small percentage of patients who have suffered a severe spinal cord injury in the past. The exact mechanisms that cause this enlargement and why such enlargement is found in some patients but not in others remains uncertain. However, there are observations that could help explain the insidious progression of this posttraumatic complication, including the presence of scarring and adhesions within the subarachnoid space, alterations in cerebrospinal fluid flow dynamics, and fluid turbulence within the syrinx cavity itself. The article by Jinkins et al in this issue of the AJNR presents us with an MR finding not previously emphasized in patients with clinically pro

Radiography of posttraumatic syringomyelia.

Posttraumatic syringomyelia was studied in 15 patients. Gas myelography in 12 patients showed a definite spinal cord swelling in 10 and a probable cord enlargement in two. Plain spinal computed tomography (CT) in four patients demonstrated intramedullary radiolucent zones in three. After intrathecal injection of metrizamide in 10 patients, cysts were opacified in eight. Postoperative CT in two ...

Radiologic evaluation of spinal cord fissures.

The clinical course and radiographic studies were reviewed of eight patients with posttraumatic spinal cord fissures (rents in the spinal cord communicating with the subarachnoid space). Five patients had spinal cord fissures associated with symptomatic intramedullary cysts that required shunting to alleviate progressive neurologic deficits and intractable pain. Their metrizamide myelograms sho...

Intraoperative spinal sonography: adjunct to metrizamide CT in the assessment and surgical decompression of posttraumatic spinal cord cysts.

Ten patients with prior spinal cord trauma were examined preoperatively by metrizamide computed tomography (CT) and were studied subsequently by intraoperative spinal sonography. On comparing intraoperative sonography with metrizamide CT, it was found that metrizamide CT tends to overestimate the size and number of posttraumatic cysts, that areas of myelomalacia on metrizamide CT correspond to ...

Morphological changes in the brachial enlargement of the spinal cord in offspring of diabetic rat

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of maternal diabetes on fetal spinal structure, especiallyin brachial enlargement. Sixteen adult female rats were divided into two groups. Diabetes was induced in one group by alloxan agent. Both groups became pregnant by natural matting. On days 7, 14, 21 and 28 after birth, the brachial enlargement of the spinal cord was collected from offsprin...

MR of parenchymal spinal cord signal change as a sign of active advancement in clinically progressive posttraumatic syringomyelia.

Extensive MR signal change in the craniad spinal cord parenchyma was found to be an ancillary sign of disease advancement in three patients with clinically progressive posttraumatic syringomyelia. This craniad margin of parenchymal spinal cord T2 hyperintensity resolved after cystoperitoneal shunt placement. There was a concomittant reduction or disappearance of the cyst in each instance, a hal...
